Workshops

There is plenty of time between the workshops and main sessions to visit with friends and to visit the dozens of exhibits renewing old friendships with colleges, missions, and trusted suppliers for our churches.

The Churches of Christ (a capella) in Minnesota

Panel:
Tommy Carr – ministers with the Eagan Church of Christ
Bruce Goodwin – ministers with the Richfield Church of Christ
Patrick Doherty – ministers with the Woodbury Church of Christ
Scott Warne – ministers with the Park Rapids Church of Christ

The Convention this year is unplugged and unstrung! We are extending an invitation to our brothers and sisters from the a capella Churches to join together with us as we assemble for worship, fellowship and encouragement. A panel of preachers will share with us about what is happening for the cause of Christ among the a capella churches in Minnesota. At the close of this discussion we should have clearer insight into: How can we better understand our fellow heirs with Christ? How can we become more united and cooperative in kingdom work?

Playing Hard To Get

Presenters: Dale DePeel & John Taplin

We occasionally hear from missionaries about hard to reach people groups around the world. Missionaries go to great lengths to find inroads for the gospel to reach into difficult places. At the same time you and I are aware of some hard to reach people who are close to home. Dale DePeel and John Taplin make it a practice to attempt to bring the message to those in their communities who are hard to reach. In this workshop they will share with us their insight into what makes some people so resistant to the good news. They will also tell us how we might persist in opening these doors that otherwise seem closed.

Homosexuality and the Bible

Presenter: Joe M. Sprinkle, Ph.D.

The issue of homosexuality is one constantly in the news and is a matter of regular political wrangling. It is also the subject of contention among those who call themselves Christians. Some Christian denominations allow practicing homosexual clergy. Many Christians consider homosexuality sinful and incompatible with being a Christian. The goal of this workshop is to explore what the Bible in both Old and New Testaments says about “homosexuality,” explore the proper Christian attitude towards homosexuals, and give pastoral guidance in the area of homosexuality.
Dr. Joe Sprinkle is Professor of Old Testament at Crossroads College. He is the author of two books and many scholarly articles, including “Sexuality, sexual Ethics” in Dictionary of the Old Testament: Pentateuch (Downers Grove: InterVarsity, 2003) and the book Biblical Law and Its Relevance (Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 2006), both of which touch on the topic of this workshop.

Teen Track Workshops

C’mon Son, Let’s Take A Walk

Presenters: 3 Generations of Kleins and Alberts

Raising boys to love the Lord and to walk in His ways is a great challenge. There are many snares set for boys and a father must guide his son so that he can avoid them. The Church awaits the next generation of men who have integrity, character and resolve. In this workshop we will hear from three generations of Kleins and Alberts’ who can speak to this topic from all perspectives. They will share with us from experience methods, challenges and blessings of mentoring your boys.

Bright Lights: Titus 2 Mentorship for Girls

Presenters: 3 Generations of 'Sisters'

Who says peer pressure is bad? Titus 2 instructs us to use it! What does it look like for an “older woman…to be a teacher of good things” to the younger women?(Titus 2:3) Can the older woman be a 16 year old, and the younger be a 12 year old? The answer is yes! Coupled with the love and admonition of a mother’s oversight, this Biblical mentorship model is based on women teaching women and it really works!. Christian girls, as young as 8 years old, are being successfully taught to follow Christ’s ways in a ministry entitled Bright Lights for the last 15 years. Haven’t heard of it? Come to this informative session and listen as 3 generations of “sisters” explain how the solidarity of Christian sisterhood has helped, and is still helping them stay strong for the Lord and navigate around the lusts of this world. It is possible to shift the paradigm away from cultural conformity and replace it with true transformity through Christian mentorship.

More workshops are planned... check back for details as they are published.
